What these programs are, and what they are not

A few working definitions, so nobody arrives expecting something we do not do. These notes apply to every program on this page.

Reader-supported, not sponsored: The monthly dispatch, the seasonal location files and the columns are funded by readers. We do not accept paid placements, gifted gear, or destination coverage bought by a tourism board. If a shop, lab or route appears in a piece, it is because a contributor used it and thought it worth writing down.
Location files describe a window, not a guarantee: When we say a Kyoto approach is best at first bell, or that drift ice on the Okhotsk coast holds its color for twenty minutes after sunset, that is a record of what a contributor found on given days. Weather, closures, festival traffic and temple schedules shift year to year. Treat the train line, exit and walking time as reliable; treat the light as a starting point you verify on the ground.
Pitches are edited, and not all are accepted: A reader pitch needs a location, a sample frame and a short note on access. If it fits the calendar and we have not covered the ground recently, an editor works through it with you. If it duplicates a spot we already ran, we will usually suggest the quieter alternative nearby instead of saying no outright.
Etiquette notes are guidance, not permission: Our tripod notes and permission phrases reflect what contributors have encountered at specific sites. They do not override a caretaker, a shop owner or a posted rule. If someone asks you to stop, stop, and write to us if the situation has changed so the file can be corrected.
No gear worship, no financial advice: Film stock comparisons and secondhand shop notes are about what a roll or a body does in real conditions, not about collecting. Budget notes cover the practical cost of moving around Japan with a camera bag; they are not investment guidance, and we do not publish anything tied to gambling or speculative schemes.
